Actress Veetra King, of Hope Mills, will be starring in the independent film thriller ‘The Darkest Heart.’ Filming begins in April in Winston-Salem.
Growing up one of seven children had its challenges for Veetra King. Money was often tight, and with five sisters and a brother, it could be hard to find a way to stand out.

King found her outlet through acting.

“Being on stage helped me escape,” she said. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

The Fayetteville native is pursuing her love of performing onto the big screen. King is getting ready to star in “The Darkest Heart,” an independent film to be shot in the Winston-Salem area.

Now 26, King is a 1998 graduate of South View High School. She lives in Hope Mills.

King said she has always loved acting but had to put her dreams on hold for more practical considerations.

She worked at Best Buy and a couple of fast-food restaurants. But the acting bug never went away.

King’s mother, Linda King, said she knew early on that her daughter had performing in her future.

“Out of seven children, she was the comedian,” Linda King said. “There was never a dull moment with her.”

Watching the Denzel Washington movie “Man on Fire” recently rekindled King’s desire to perform. “That movie really blew me away,” King said.

She began to seek out acting opportunities. She found one at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where she is a student.

King plays the wife of falsely accused rapist Tom Robinson in a production of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The play opens at the college Friday; performances continue through April 1. Dennis Johnson is directing the play, which is free and open to the public.

“I play one very emotional scene near the end where I hear (Tom) got shot,” King said.

Another opportunity presented itself online.

King found an online request for actors to audition for “The Darkest Heart.” She tried out and was chosen.

Michael DeLoach, director of “The Darkest Heart,” described it as an “edgy thriller.” It involves a group of ghost hunters who encounter a group of convicts.

King plays Cecibel, one of the ghost hunters.

“She seems to bring a really fresh, wholesome type of presence to the table,” said DeLoach, who lives in Mocksville. “There’s something about her that is very unique. ...

“She’s definitely been a pleasure to have aboard.”

DeLoach said filming should wrap in June. The movie should be finished in October or November, and he hopes to take it on the festival circuit after that.

King said she’s not sure what the future will hold for her after “The Darkest Heart.” She’s only sure that it will involve performing.

“My goal is to become a successful entertainer in writing, acting and producing,” she said. “I want to be able to do it all.”
